"On a desert island, the pigeon post will bring only
one publication each month. Which one would you choose and why?"
Lucy Cooper
The publication I would choose would
be, inevitably, Vogue. I doubt I could function without my monthly fix; the
rush of anticipation to discover who is on the front of the issue, the thrill
of excitement when finding out what the new trends are, the thousands of rainy
Sunday afternoons spent drooling over the gorgeous glossy pages for the 10th
time since buying it. It’s just fantastic.
Since Arthur Turnure founded Vogue in
1892, and Diana Vreeland became editor-in-chief in 1963, Vogue has been
providing readers with the newest trends, international and at home, is embellished
with beautiful photography and countless articles of various subject matters. The
magazine is contemporary, authentic, intelligent and is filled with art and
articles discussing anything from the likes of Chanel’s new season couture to
travelling and culture. It is almost a lifestyle in itself. Vogue is not merely
just a ‘fashion publication’, it is so much more than that which is why it’s
competitors hardly stand a chance against it. Browsing through the likes of
‘Look’ or ‘Elle’ and the contrast is severe; these publications are simply
devoid of the creative energy that Vogue encapsulates. Not only does Vogue
serve readers with their monthly fashion update, it also boasts articles on
health, beauty, travel and much more. On a desert island, these health and
travel pages may be useful!
When reading through Vogue, there is
sense of it being a well-needed celebration of some of the most talented people
who exist in the fashion and creative world. Upcoming and well-known designers,
artists, writers, journalists and the like are given an opportunity to express
their talent, yet subtly. Vogue epitomises classic style, sophistication and
elegance yet keeps recent and young. Just the other day I found vintage copies
of Vogue from the late 80’s and early 90’s in my attic and when comparing these
to recent issues, there is little difference, except obviously trends. This
shows the consistency Vogue holds, the way it has and always will be a style
bible adored for lifetimes. Yet Vogue is not a ‘style bible’ in the way that it
produces clones of people all dressed in the same way, it is inspirational in
that it helps to sturdy effortless and elegant style for those that are
inspired by it. I provide no explanation when people ask why I hoard multiple stacks
of Vogues in my room. No explanation at all.
